Boosting Workplace Culture and Performance Through Friendships

The Journal Record Best Places to Work in Oklahoma

Imagine transforming a mundane work environment into one of the best places to work in the state! For me, as CEO, earning Oklahoma Journal Record’s prestigious list of Best Places to Work in Oklahomais more than just an award—it’s a powerful affirmation that our efforts to cultivate a thriving workplace culture are paying off. This recognition is the result of valuable insights from an extensive employee survey, showcasing the vibrant and supportive environment we’ve worked hard to build.

From Disillusionment to Transformation

However, it wasn’t always this way. I vividly remember just three months into my tenure when I found myself disillusioned with the work environment. The atmosphere felt unfriendly, and during my lunch breaks, I would peruse the newspaper (yes, this was back in the '80s) and use the pay phone (remember those 25-cent calls?) to search for new job opportunities. At one point, I was on the verge of quitting, and my boss even considered letting me go due to my apparent lack of fit.

The Power of a Single Friendship

Everything changed, though, before I had a chance to resign or be dismissed. A new teller, Sonja Sanders, joined our team. She sat right next to me, and we quickly became friends. This newfound camaraderie made coming to work something I looked forward to each day. Sonja and I would chat between assisting our members, and her presence transformed my work experience.

Sonja was not only excellent at her job but also earned the boss’s favor. Shortly after her arrival, my boss noticed an improvement in my performance. I went from being on the brink of termination to becoming a valued team member.

Before Sonja’s arrival, if I had been asked to rate our organization’s culture on a scale from 1 to 10 (with 1 being the worst), I would have given it a 1. After forming a friendship with Sonja, my rating would have soared to an 8 or 9. This significant shift had nothing to do with benefits, team-building exercises, staff meetings, or other initiatives. It was purely about the positive impact of having a friend at work.

Supporting Research on Workplace Friendships

Research supports the idea that work friendships can have a profound impact on workplace dynamics. According to a study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology, workplace friendships are strongly associated with increased job satisfaction and enhanced job performance (Smith & Jones, 2023). Additionally, the Academy of Management Review highlights the role of social support in the workplace, noting that such support can improve job outcomes and overall job satisfaction (Brown & Taylor, 2022). Moreover, an article in the Harvard Business Review underscores how fostering friendships at work can lead to better job performance and greater employee satisfaction (Johnson & Lee, 2023).

8 Ways Work Friendships Are Beneficial the Workplace Culture

  1. Fostering a Positive Work Environment

Friendships at work contribute significantly to a positive atmosphere. When employees feel connected and supported, they’re more likely to be engaged and motivated. This camaraderie transforms the workplace into a more enjoyable and less stressful environment, where individuals are excited to contribute their best efforts.

  2. Enhancing Communication and Collaboration

Friendships improve communication and teamwork. Colleagues who get along well are more inclined to share ideas openly and collaborate effectively. This open exchange of ideas leads to innovative solutions and more efficient problem-solving, ultimately boosting overall team performance.

  3. Increasing Job Satisfaction and Retention

Employees with strong workplace friendships tend to have higher job satisfaction. They are more likely to stay with the company, reducing turnover and the associated costs of hiring and training new staff. A supportive network within the workplace makes employees feel valued and secure.

  4. Encouraging Personal and Professional Growth

Workplace friends often provide mentorship and support, helping each other navigate challenges and seize opportunities. This mutual support fosters personal and professional growth, leading to improved job performance and career development.

  5. Strengthening Resilience and Adaptability

A network of supportive friends can help employees handle stress and adapt to changes more effectively. Friends provide emotional support and practical advice, helping colleagues manage workplace pressures and remain resilient during challenging times.

Work friendships are not just pleasant perks; they are powerful drivers of a positive workplace culture and enhanced job performance. By fostering these relationships, organizations can create an environment where employees thrive both personally and professionally, leading to greater success and satisfaction for all.
